The Four Horsemen of the Modern Apocalypse
At present the human race is face to face with the four horsemen of the modern apocalypse: the pandemic, weapons of mass destruction, the climate crisis and our hyper-dependence on networked information systems. For the first time in history, global threats could cause the destruction of thousands of species, including our own. Identifying and understanding these threats will allow us to push forward the political, social and scientific programs that may prevent them from materializing. The greatest threat of all, however, is the way in which these existential problems have coincided with the chaotic leadership of the world’s most powerful nations, among them those led by Viktor Orbán in Hungary, Rodrigo Duterte in the Philippines, Tayyip Erdoğan in Turkey, Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, Narendra Modi in India and Boris Johnson in Great Britain. These leaders influence the media, wield untold economic power, appoint judges, cultivate populism and seek to undermine the very institutions that brought them to power.
